Lake Vostok, Antarctica
One of the largest lakes in the world, Lake Vostok is about the extent of lake Ontario, but twice as deep, and it has been sealed off from the rest of the world under 4km of ice for 15 million years
Beneath this almost impenetrable layer of ice lies an inaccessible gral for science, as samples brought back to the surface confirmed that a rich variety of life with unknown DNA was present there.
