Bosavi Crater, Papua New Guinea
This kilometre-deep crater was recently found to be the home of a unique ecosystem isolated from the world.
It used to be volcano until its cone collapsed in its last eruption 200,000 years ago.
In 2009, it was investigated by a group of scientists who discovered more than 40 previously unknown species, including a giant rat measuring up to 82cm in length.
